Schitt’s Creek star dives into graphic novels
Emily Hampshire, who played the wisecracking, deadpan Rosebud Motel owner Stevie Budd in Schitt’s Creek, has launched a fabulous graphic novel, writes ANDREA BEATTIE
Emily Hampshire, who starred as Stevie Budd in the hit series Schitt’s Creek, has launched a graphic novel, called Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch.
One of the best things about Schitt’s Creek – and let’s face it, there’s a LOT to love – was watching the wisecracking and quick-witted Stevie Budd discover who she really was, and realise that was enough.
Stevie’s journey from playing second fiddle to the lead actors to one of the best-known and loved characters in the multiple Emmy Award winning-show was nothing short of inspirational.
And that was in no small part due to the talents, and comedic skills, of Emily Hampshire.
Hampshire, a self-confessed weirdo (and we love her for it), hosted a panel at San Diego Comic Con to introduce her latest venture, a graphic novel called Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch.
What’s Basic Witch all about?
The novel was presented by Z2 Comics, and here’s how they describe it.
“The book blends millennial homebody ennui with wand-waving delight in the story of Amelia, the least-favorite daughter of L.A.’s most famous family of witches, the Aierwoods (think the Kardiashians of the witch world). She’s a so-so spellcaster who would rather eat Pop-Tarts while listening to murder podcasts than be a reality TV star.
While Amelia’s sisters have all followed in the footsteps of her prominent parents, everything she does is just a little…off-brand. A late bloomer who has yet to find her calling, Amelia uses her powers for mostly mundane things, but even those lead to magical misfires, e.g. the unfashionable witch’s hat that’s permanently stuck to her head.
As her family’s fame continues to rise, they have no choice but to exclude their bumbling black sheep daughter from the next great chapter of the Aierwoods—reality TV! With the help of her adopted brother Spaghetti—who she accidentally turned into a yeti… long story—Amelia must carve her own path outside of her family’s influence.”
The book will feature main cover art by Caitlyn Rose Boyle & Liu, with the deluxe editions including prints featuring artwork by Gudsnuk, Cara McGee, and Dominique Roses, along with enamel pins and an Amelia Aierwood lunchbox featuring art from Fred Stressing.
Emily was incredible at SDCC
Emily’s panel, moderated by Nerdist Editor-in-Chief Amy Ratcliffe, was an absolute delight.
She was humble, engaging, funny and insightful … and we now have a much better insight into the character Amelia, and why she is the way she is, why Yetis are real and why you’re always more than you think you are.
